In these three forums\, Rev. Jim shows us how The ART of Engaging Holy Scripture is a modern\, Episcopal way of following Jesus’ practice. \nFollowing these forums\, we will start new taehs small groups the week of February 11. (You do not need to attend the forums to sign up for a group). Groups will meet on zoom and in person with weekday morning and evening groups planned. We’re taking signups now. See below for how to sign up for a group. \nWhat you can expect if you join a taehs small group – Part 2 of 3  \n\nTaehs groups meet weekly for one hour\, in structured sessions with three components. Each week we share stories from our lives\, report on our engagements with the Bible since our last meeting and engage a Bible passage together in our group. Having these three components creates dynamism that energizes the group and keeps us coming back.\nTaehs groups are guided by trained facilitators. Rev. Jim developed the curriculum and the training program for facilitators. Facilitators do not teach; they guide the group to ensure everyone has a chance to share if they wish\, that the sharing stays on track\, and that the group starts and ends on time.\n\nFrom a participant: “The sharing and insight I get from fellow group members really helps me see the readings with new eyes. I was apprehensive at first\, thought I didn’t know “enough” to contribute. It has instead been very supportive and fruitful. He will lead us from the example and teaching of Jesus to the sixth century Rule of Saint Benedict\, which has influenced virtually all of western Christian spirituality; from the Rule of Saint Benedict to the first Book of Common Prayer in 1549; and from the first Book of Common Prayer to contemporary Episcopal spirituality and practice. Along the way\, we will focus on praxis (combining theory and practice) and how taehs offers a unique Episcopal curriculum for modern Episcopalians. \nFollowing these forums\, we will start new taehs small groups the week of February 11. See below for how to sign up for a group. \nWhat you can expect if you join a taehs small group – Part 1 of 3  \n\nBible study that leads to and prepares for prayer. Prior to coming to Saint Barnabas\, Rev. Jim worked with members of his former parish for ten years to write a “Bible study curriculum for Episcopalians\,” with the goals of putting the Bible into the hands of the people\, and letting the Bible be the starting place for conversations with God. This conversational approach makes all the difference.\nThe curriculum consists of a method for reading\, studying\, and praying with the Bible\, and a process for small groups (7 to 12 people). Each study includes commentary by Rev. Jim that makes the Bible passages more accessible and assists in the taehs method.\nTaehs has been used at Saint Barnabas for 19 years; it is also used in several other Episcopal churches.\n\nFrom a participant: “I see the Bible in a different way than I had before. I love how my group shows me different ways of experiencing Jesus’ words along with my own. I sit with the words now where I just read them before\, and often discover the possibility of totally new meanings. DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT  6:45 – 8:00PM | THE OTHER CUP \nSeventh-\, eighth-\, and ninth-graders are invited to participate in Confirmation\, a deepening of their commitment to God through the Holy Spirit. We understand that this time in a teenager’s life is one of growth and upheaval\, so we seek to help them strengthen and sustain their life-giving relationships with Christ. Confirmation classes and activities provide opportunities for prayer\, community\, worship\, and service that go beyond our regular adult-centered Sunday morning worship to connect youth with each other and with Christ in a way that is most meaningful to them. \nSaint Barnabas has the only two-year Episcopal Confirmation program in the state of Arizona. \nConfirmation groups meet Wednesday nights from 6:45- 8:00 in the Other Cup. DESCRIPTION:TUITION-FREE CHILDREN’S MUSIC\nREGISTER \nAt Saint Barnabas in Scottsdale\, we believe that children of all ages can engage in musical education that leads to a lifelong love of music making. Starting at age 3\, we offer quality music classes and performance opportunities that allow children to learn the fundamentals of musicianship. Our approach is gently faith-based and we welcome your children to join this enriching program. \nMusic Makers (Ages 3-5) \nDrop off and playground time begins at 5:00pm \nWednesdays\, 5:30 – 6:30pm \nDesigned for children to have fun while developing a love for music\, Music Makers is for preschool children. We use developmentally appropriate games and musical activities while learning engaging songs about life and faith. Although not a performance group\, we do encourage our students to try singing in front of a group of friends and family for Children’s Chapel one Sunday per semester. \nChildren’s Choirs (Grades K-8) \nDrop off and playground time begins at 5:00pm \nWednesdays\, 5:30 – 6:30pm \nChildren’s Choirs at Saint Barnabas perform regularly throughout the school year—usually once a month on Sundays. Both choirs engage in elements of solfege\, harmony singing\, note reading\, and sight singing. All members are assigned a red robe for singing in church. \nAndante (Grades K-2) \nAndante Choir provides an excellent introduction to choral singing and performance. Students engage in warm-ups and music education weekly while preparing to sing in Sunday church services and other events. \nAllegro (Grades 3-8) \nSinging increasingly challenging music\, Allegro Choir gives upper elementary students an opportunity to serve as leaders in the music program. \nDinner (All Ages) \nDonate for Dinner \nBe sure to designate your donation for Wednesday Night Dinner. \nWednesdays\, 6:30-7:00pm \nKid-friendly meal options. DESCRIPTION:“What we do for the African American community benefits everybody. Anything that knocks down barriers is a good thing.” -Br. Lee Hughes\, OP \nBl. (Blessed) Absalom Jones holds a special place in history as a pioneer in civil liberty and service. Born into slavery in Delaware in 1746\, Jones purchased freedom for his family and began attending St. George’s Methodist Episcopal congregation which was\, nominally\, an interracial congregation. However\, one Sunday\, African American congregants were asked to move from their seats on the first floor to the upper balcony – where they would not be seen. Following this incident\, Jones left the congregation but continued to be an active member of the Episcopal Church\, going on to be ordained as the first African-American Episcopal priest. \nSince his death on February 13\, 1818\, commemorating the Feast Day of Absalom Jones is one symbolic step we can take as a community toward ensuring that such treatment of African Americans – or any “other” group – is not only never repeated but that we proactively and continuously course-correct to avoid it\, always striving to improve equality\, fairness and representation for all people. \nA celebration of Jones’s Feast Day will take place in the Sanctuary. The service of liturgy and Holy Eucharist is hosted by The Karl and Virginia Washington Arizona Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians\, in partnership with the Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Arizona. \nThe Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie\nThe Rt. Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall\, sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona\, will preside over the service\, with a message from guest preacher the Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie\, who grew up in Johannesburg under apartheid. DESCRIPTION:Empowering the Laity for Pastoral Care\n \nDo you feel God calling you into a new ministry to be the hands\, feet\, and listening ears for a broken world?  Are you ready for a new commitment to your faith and in service to others? \nTraining to be a Community of Hope Lay Chaplain\nA 12-week training for Community of Hope lay chaplains begins in October 2022\, and Saint Barnabas is welcoming applications.  \nCommunity of Hope (COH) is a pastoral care model based on Benedictine Spirituality. The program builds a community of caregivers who are united in prayer and worship and shaped by the common practices and ethos of the Rule of Benedict.  \nCOH equips and deploys lay chaplains to meet the varied pastoral needs in the broader community: loss\, grief\, illness\, aging\, life transition\, loneliness\, to name a few. \nThe training modules are a rich time of exploration and team building and will be led by parishioners\, clergy\, and experts in the field.
