SUMMARY:Celebrating Absalom Jones
DESCRIPTION:“What we do for the African American community benefits everybody. Anything that knocks down barriers is a good thing.” -Br. Lee Hughes\, OP \nBl. (Blessed) Absalom Jones holds a special place in history as a pioneer in civil liberty and service. Born into slavery in Delaware in 1746\, Jones purchased freedom for his family and began attending St. George’s Methodist Episcopal congregation which was\, nominally\, an interracial congregation. However\, one Sunday\, African American congregants were asked to move from their seats on the first floor to the upper balcony – where they would not be seen. Following this incident\, Jones left the congregation but continued to be an active member of the Episcopal Church\, going on to be ordained as the first African-American Episcopal priest. \nSince his death on February 13\, 1818\, commemorating the Feast Day of Absalom Jones is one symbolic step we can take as a community toward ensuring that such treatment of African Americans – or any “other” group – is not only never repeated but that we proactively and continuously course-correct to avoid it\, always striving to improve equality\, fairness and representation for all people. \nA celebration of Jones’s Feast Day will take place in the Sanctuary. The service of liturgy and Holy Eucharist is hosted by The Karl and Virginia Washington Arizona Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians\, in partnership with the Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Arizona. \nThe Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie\nThe Rt. Rev. Jennifer A. Reddall\, sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Arizona\, will preside over the service\, with a message from guest preacher the Rev. Vanessa MacKenzie\, who grew up in Johannesburg under apartheid. Music by Saint Barnabas featuring Ms. Jackie Island of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Phoenix who will sing “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen.” \nThis event will be open to all. Questions? The program builds a community of caregivers who are united in prayer and worship and shaped by the common practices and ethos of the Rule of Benedict.  \nCOH equips and deploys lay chaplains to meet the varied pastoral needs in the broader community: loss\, grief\, illness\, aging\, life transition\, loneliness\, to name a few. \nThe training modules are a rich time of exploration and team building and will be led by parishioners\, clergy\, and experts in the field. Jesus prayed “That they all may be one.” \nWe’ve all heard these words … after 2\,000 years\, have we lost sight\, lost hope\, lost the will to engage in what the vision asks of us? \nIn the divisive\, contentiousness of our times\, does the church offer a different way?  \nIn Discovering Common Ground\, Listening ‘till the Listening Starts\, we will learn a different way. \nWe will learn not just what we might do but how we can do it. And we can. The skill is imminently learnable. We will practice\, practice\, practice. And we will learn to laugh at ourselves! \nThe skill of not just listening but profound listening. The gift of not just being listened to but of feeling heard. The joy that spontaneously arises in real relationship. The mysterious power that overtakes us as we move from superficial unity to profound harmony. \nBut\, be not confused\, the dream asks something of us … “I urge you\, therefore\, to walk worthily of the calling with which you have been called\, with all humility and modesty and gentleness and meekness\, with tranquil endurance bearing with one another in love\, endeavoring\, being zealous\, with eagerness making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:1-3 paraphrased). \n“I don’t know how to change the world … unless it is one relationship at a time. DESCRIPTION:join us in welcoming The Rev. Canon Anita Braden as our guest preacher at the 10:15 service!\nThe Rev. Cn. Braden serves as the Canon to the Ordinary* and the Chief of Staff for the Diocese of Arizona. She functions as the Bishop’s right hand\, and her many\, many responsibilities include the deployment of clergy\, congregational development\, and she is the Director of Best Skills Best Churches. Rev. Cn. Braden has more than two decades of ministerial service in Christ through a wide variety of religious venues. Her first call to service was in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.  After ordination\, she served as a Trauma Chaplain in a Children’s Hospital while enjoying preaching and teaching in various denominations. Subsequently\, Rev. Braden was called by an Episcopal bishop to serve on the diocesan staff and later became ordained as an Episcopal priest. She has served as the Chaplain and Department Chair for Religious Studies at an all-girls Episcopal boarding school in Virginia. \nShe is in the final stages of obtaining her Doctor of Ministry from Virginia Theological Seminary. \n*(“Canon to the Ordinary” means that she is a priest who works directly for the Bishop; the bishop is known as the “Ordinary\,” meaning overseer.) \nLocation: Saint Barnabas Sanctuary

Div and MTS at Seabury Western Theological Seminary in Chicago. She was ordained in 2006 and comes to us from the Diocese of Utah. Rev. Jennifer has been married for 25 years to her wife\, Amy\, who teaches first grade. Together they enjoy the company of their two dogs. DESCRIPTION:SANDWICHES FOR EAST VALLEY MEN’S CENTER\nSandwich Week is here again! This is a time where we spend a week of mornings making sandwiches and assembling bag lunches for men who are currently residing at the East Valley Men’s Center in Mesa\, Arizona. Some 75 men live there at a time and are transitioning out of homelessness. \nWe gather in the Saint Barnabas kitchen for only about an hour and put together lunches that one of us then delivers to the center. You can serve by making sandwiches\, bagging up veggies\, chips\, or cookies\, putting each bag together\, and more. It’s a fast\, easy way to make a huge difference in the lives of men who are working hard to get out of a difficult situation. \nBeginning Sunday\, August 1\, we will again be making lunches for the East Valley Men’s Center. Stations will be set up (socially distanced) in Hutton Hall. Please bring your mask (if you forget\, one will be provided). We need volunteers from Sunday\, August 1 through Saturday\, August 7.
