PROFILE OF RT. REV. JOHN ORINA OMANGI, BISHOP-ELECT ACK UPPER SOUTHERN NYANZA DIOCESE

John Orina Omangi was born on 7th January 1981 to Mr. Daniel Omangi Kurura and Mrs. Marisela Nyaboke Omangi, in a family of eleven children, being the second child. He received his calling to serve in the house of the Lord while he was a secondary school student in form two at Bogwendo Mixed Secondary School in Nyamira County, Tombe Village in 1998.

As a young man, he served at ACK St. Philips Parish in the ACK Diocese of Southern Nyanza- as a keyboardist, where also served as an evangelist, until the year 2005 when he joined Carlile College School of Theology & Business Studies for a 3 year Higher Diploma course in Urban Mission.

While in college, he served in the Student Council as a Coordinator for Missions. He took part in spearheading the planting of Churches in Kibera, Eastleigh and Ruai.

He was made a Deacon in 2009 and posted to ACK St. John Migori. In 2011, He was ordained a priest by the Rt. Rev. James Kenneth Ochiel and deployed as Vicar of ACK St. Stephen’s Nyamira Parish. In 2016, he was appointed and consecrated as suffragan Bishop overseeing the Kisii area Bishopric under the ACK Diocese of Southern Nyanza led by the Rt. Rev. James Ochiel.

In 2022, the Provincial Permanent Commission of Division and Creation of Dioceses, chaired by the Rt. Rev. Moses Masamba, Bishop of Mbeere Diocese- after thorough scrutiny, presented a proposal to elevate Kisii Area Bishopric into a Diocese. This would be by carving it out of the ACK Diocese of Southern Nyanza. The Provincial Synod unanimously endorsed and adopted the Commission’s motion, declaring the Bishopric as the ACK Diocese of Upper Southern Nyanza with effect 1st January 2023.

This set in motion the process of setting up institutions that would support its new status including the search and election of a Bishop. The Diocesan Electoral College declared Bishop Omangi the Bishop-elect on the 24th of June, 2023. He will be enthroned as the Dioceses’ first bishop on the 27th of August 2023 at the Gusii stadium.

Bishop Omangi is married to Beth Wamboi Mburu with whom they are blessed with four children.
