“Come to nothing” - Thomas Keating 🔘 It is possible, maybe even common, to think about listening in quite an active way. When the process of listening comes to mind, images may present themselves of nodding, thoughtful chin-stroking, even frantically scribbled note-taking. “Active listening” is a valuable practice, to be sure. 👂 Yet, the sense of listening as a fundamentally quiet act may take us by surprise. Thomas Keating’s concept “Come to nothing” is illustrative of the self-emptying process that occurs at the foundation of being truly present for the act of listening.⁠

We Love Our Sunday School Teachers! 🥰⁠

Our lovely Sunday School Teachers have completed another year of nurturing faith formation in our youngest parishioners. Over the course of the year, they played an important role in the transition of our newly renovated Children’s Center (as part of our Welcoming the Neighborhood capital project), remaining a constant, stable presence to the children. With great care, ❤️ they have devoted their Sunday mornings to loving our children and teaching them the light of Christ. We are so grateful for their service! The teachers were recently treated to a luncheon and celebrated by our Children’s Minister, Sarah Petersen. Many thanks!⁠

A shooting in Buffalo that expressed racial hatred

A shooting in Buffalo that expressed racial hatred, a shooting in a church in California expressing national hatred, a shooting in Texas in which our most vulnerable were targeted. The recent spate of mass shootings has been weighing on us all. As we seek a faithful response we offer the following prayer, which was written for a school chapel service by a friend of Rev. Robert. The prayer references the most recent shooting. Let us pray:

Loving God, Source of all peace,
you weep when love gives way to hatred,
and our souls, once again, weep
for those harmed and killed by gun violence,
especially for the children and adults
who were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
We pray for the dead. We pray for the injured.
We pray for their families and community.
We pray for the shooter who was full of hate.
Where weapons replace prayers,
where peace is overcome with violence,
may our hearts grow bold,
and may our communities be transformed
by our actions, our voices, and our votes.
Discomfort us, O Lord, so that we resist becoming numb,
Help us to believe and to know that such violence is not normal,
That such violence is not necessary and not natural,
and that, as citizens and as a nation,
we have the power to change
and to create a new America that is free from gun violence.
We ask all of this through the power of your Holy Spirit,
in the name of the Prince of Peace.

Commitment Sunday for our Welcoming the Neighborhood Capital project is this weekend! ⭐⁠

The Spirit of the living God thrives within our community with a generous welcome. Our time to be inspired by the Hope of our founders and carry that Hope forward has come. Working together, we can change lives by welcoming our parishioners with an updated parish kitchen in Hutton Hall, with increased outreach to new disciples through increased video conferencing, and with support for adult and youth faith journeys in upgraded facilities. Our time of faith, leadership and action has come to ensure that our buildings and grounds also thrive with a generous, profound welcome. With God’s help, we will!⁠

In listening to somebody, you are given the opportunity to act as midwife for their soul: to witness the emptying of their heart.
