Our Saint Barnabas community has always been committed to nurturing the future leaders and young members of our church, and one of the ways we actively support the aspirations of young individuals is through our scholarship aid program. This initiative aims to empower deserving candidates by providing them with the financial means to pursue higher education and unlock their potential.

Join us on Sunday, June 30, when we congratulate our youth members:

Sophia Palmquist

Sophia Palmquist graduated from Veritas Preparatory Academy and will attend Scottsdale Community College for two years and finish her schooling at Arizona State University. Her major is science with a pre-med track. “My involvement at Saint Barnabas has helped me realize the importance of community and charity. Love is helping your community, love is taking time to help others, love is the ability to sacrifice and most importantly love is being welcoming and caring.”

Morgan Tefft

Morgan Tefft graduated from Chaparral High School and will attend the University of Tulsa. She is majoring in biology with a pre-med focus and a minor in Spanish. “Saint Barnabas has motivated me to be more involved in a broader community. It has been a great place for me to develop spirituality. The manifestation of the Christian beliefs of showing kindness and loving our neighbors has deepened my connections with God.”

Morena Trujillo

Morena Trujillo graduated from Primavera Online High School. She will be attending Chandler-Gilbert Community College and is interested in music. “I love Saint Barnabas because they have a great music program. It has helped me to gain confidence with interacting with others like being a part of the Phoenix Children’s Chorus, where I have had opportunities to perform all over the country. It has been comforting to know that my faith in my community keeps me in my prayers and gives me a sense of security.”

We will have a reception in the Music Center after the 10:15 service so you can meet and greet our scholarship recipients.

Each student is receiving a total of $3,200.00.

Jeff Underwood Scholarship ($1,000.00) Jeff loved serving as an acolyte, being part of Sunday school, and participating in other youth events and activities. Sadly, Jeff died of
cancer on January 30, 2003. Before he died Jeff let his parents know that he would like them to encourage and honor youth at Saint Barnabas. In loving memory of their son and out of admiration and respect for the young people at Saint Barnabas, Jeff’s parents, Tammy and Jon, have established this scholarship fund to recognize and honor the young people of Saint Barnabas who, like Jeff, loved being part of this community.

ECW (Episcopal Church Women) Scholarship  ($1,000.00) A group of faithful church women who meet weekly mornings for fellowship and service opportunities. They love their church and each other and for well over 30 years have provided college scholarships for our Saint Barnabas youth.

Kelly O’Connor Swanson Scholarship ($500.00) Kelly loved and valued education and died at the young age of 50 in 2014. In her memory, Kelly’s mother, Helen Swanson, funds college scholarships for our Saint Barnabas youth.

David Muniz Scholarship ($700) Anil Coelho is honoring his late husband with this scholarship. David was a voice teacher and had a passion for education, believing that every student should have the help they need to pursue their dreams and to use their funds wisely.

We will recognize our scholarship recipients and donors at the 10:15am service and honor their participation in our Saint Barnabas church community, as well as their dedication to education and serving others.
