The Rev. Susie Parker: Guiding the Flock
As the weather starts to pleaseantly turn, our Saint Barnabas Community came together to celebrate a cherished annual tradition – the Blessing of the Animals. Led by our Deacon, The Rev. Susie Parker with grace and warmth. Her deep connection to animals and her understanding of the spiritual bond between humans and their pets shone brightly as she conducted the blessings. The atmosphere was filled with reverence and joy, as congregants and their animal friends joined in the service. This special outdoor worship service at the Ramada, paid homage to the 13th-century ministry of St. Francis, who held a deep compassion for all of God’s creatures. On this memorable day, our furry, feathered, and even scaly companions were welcomed with open arms, and a lot of wet noses and a curious kitty cat showed up to partake in this heartwarming event.
St. Francis: A Saint of Compassion
St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day falls on October 4th, is renowned for his unwavering love and care for animals. He believed that all living beings were part of God’s creation and deserving of love and respect. In his Canticle of the Creatures, he praised the sun, moon, wind, water, and even death, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life. St. Francis’ ministry of compassion and kindness towards animals is a timeless lesson that continues to inspire people around the world today.
Each year, our congregation gathers in the spirit of St. Francis to honor his legacy and offer blessings to our beloved pets. These faithful companions have brought joy, comfort, and love into our lives, and the Blessing of the Animals is our way of recognizing and celebrating their presence.
Moments of Blessing and Reflection
During the service, each animal received an individual blessing. The Rev. Susie Parker lovingly blessed each furry head, offering words of hope and comfort. As she sprinkled holy water, you could see the gratitude and love in the eyes of the human companions. A moving experience, a moment of shared spirituality between people and their pets. This was also awonderful opportunity for our community to come together, all while celebrating the unique bond between humans and animals. Laughter and smiles filled the air as stories were shared about the quirks and antics of our beloved pets.
