The Image as Text: Faith, Semiotics, and Visual Language in Christian Art History
Online Summer Series with the Rector
Thursdays, July 9, 16, and 23 at 5pm | Meets online
This July, join the Rev. Robyn for her first online “Summer Series with the Rector,” a three-part exploration of Christian art, symbolism, and visual storytelling. Titled The Image as Text: Faith, Semiotics, and Visual Language in Christian Art History, this engaging series invites participants to discover how works of art have communicated theological positions, biblical narratives, and spiritual meaning across the centuries.
From the earliest Christian icons and mosaics to medieval manuscripts, Renaissance masterpieces, and contemporary sacred art, Christians have used visual imagery to express faith in powerful and enduring ways. This course will examine how images function as a form of language, exploring the symbols, signs, and visual conventions that artists have employed to teach, inspire, and shape religious understanding. Together, participants will learn how to “read” Christian art more deeply, uncovering layers of meaning that often go unnoticed.
Whether you are an art enthusiast, a student of theology, or simply curious about the rich visual heritage of the Christian tradition, this series offers an accessible and thought-provoking opportunity for learning and discussion. No prior knowledge of art history is required.
Please note that regular Sunday Adult Faith Formation in Hutton Hall will be on hiatus during June and July. Instead of meeting in person, Adult Faith Formation will take place through this special online summer offering.
Because the course is presented via Zoom, you can participate from wherever you are. Save the dates and join us on Thursdays, July 9, July 16, and July 23 at 5pm throughout July.
